Happy New Year Ranch of the Rockies, Here it is the 5th of January 2012 another year out here in God’s country. With the snow hanging around and the cold weather helping, you may have noticed that the wind has brought in a few drifts. I would like to remind folks that those drifts can throw you off road very easily. Please be careful while driving the roads.
Wildlife sightings here on the ranch have increased a lot since the elk have moved during their winter migration. This provides some great opportunities for photo shoots. If you see a herd on the ranch, please let me know, because I have a lot of folks that ask me where they have been seen.
Projects for the New Year, although I don’t have any big projects planned I still get the opportunity to drive the roads and pick up trash. If you have a favorite road that you like to walk, please sign up for the Adopt a Road program, that is sponsored each year, normally in the summer months, but this can happen all year long if you would like.
Burn Pit Status, as you have seen the burn pit is active and will be smoldering for a few months. There was a lot of wood in there. With any luck it should re-open in April as planned. I will be looking for volunteers starting in March.
Pets and life stock, please remember that during the winter months these critters need food, shelter and water that is thawed out. I have received a few complaints of some animals that are not being taken care of. Please call Animal Control if there is a concern and we will let the professionals handle it. There number is 719-836-4121.
Winter maintenance on you vehicles, please, if you change your own oil and radiator fluids do not dump it into them into the trash compactor. It is against the Law!!
The Chili Cook Off is the next big event here on the ranch and now is the time to explore some new recipes, or refine the old ones. I will keep you all informed, as the dates have not been set as of yet. I am looking forward to this year’s contest.

Mid-winter is here. Today is sunny and cool, but we are expecting snow this weekend. As we begin 2012, the snowpack is down a little, but we are better off than our neighbors to the west. Our snowpack is at about 76% of average for this time of year.

The board has been busy putting together and adopting a budget for 2012. You will be getting all the financial information in the next newsletter. 2011 was a very good year for the association and we are looking forward to another good year in 2012. We have budgeted a large sum for doing whatever it takes to fix our water system at the Ranch house and the office. Hopefully we won’t have to spend what we put in the budget, but we felt we must get the bad water/plumbing problems corrected, as they have been costing us a great deal and still persisting.
Another thing that is in the works is a new website. Andy Meng, of Infront Webworks, has volunteered to work with us on this project. Hopefully, we will be bringing it online in the very near future. I think everyone will be pleased with the new approach and the ease of use that will come along with the new site. One of our objectives is to make the newsletters easier to access and thereby, be able to convince more of our members to opt for receiving the newsletter by downloading it from the site. This will result in some pretty significant printing and postage savings, as well as giving folks the benefit of the color photos in the newsletters. There will be more information in the Winter newsletter, which will be out before the end of the month.

December 20th 2011
I would like to start of by saying thank you to all that took place in setting up and bringing some fantastic food to the Christmas Party which was a huge success. A very special Thank you to Bernice Hopmier for bringing her talent and guitar and helping us all sing a few Christmas songs. There was a great turnout and I believe that Next year we should have it at Station #5 on Ranch Road and Campfire. The station is a lot bigger and it has indoor plumbing Yeah!! Thank you all again for your help and for showing up to help celebrate the Holidays.
We will be lighting off the burn pit this week due to all the recent snow and the promise of more. I t should burn for about four months or more and, Hopefully, be done by April 15th 2012. Please call me if you see the fire getting out of hand or something Unusual.
The holidays are here and we have a lot of folks coming up for a visit, The compactor has been serviced and the recycling trailers have been emptied. Thank you all for recycling the cardboard and plastic. There is a Metal recycling bin in the fenced off area behind the trailers for Cans and small metal objects.
Snow Plowing, I have received a lot of calls from folks looking for a number of people that Plow here on the ranch an I have a few Numbers I can give out and if you plow snow and would like me to recommend you services please stop by the office and leave your business card or Post one up on the bulletin board.
Bulletin Board, If you haven’t noticed there is new plexiglass on one of the doors because the wind caught it and broke it. I have had to collect as many of the cards and signs that I could and most of them could not be reused. Please keep all posting on a 5" X 7" card or smaller.
Here are a few pictures of the burn pit.

With the snow falling and people driving around please be careful and watch for children that may be sledding or tubing down the roads as I have found. Please remember that the hill that is calling to you try it out may be Private Property. Please check before you slide OK?
Last but not least My Wife and I would like to wish everyone a very safe and Happy Holiday season.

Updates on the 5th and 20th

We are having a very nice normal winter here on the Ranch. Today (12/22/11) we woke up to about 8” of fresh snow. Nighttime temperatures have been in single digits, while the daytime highs are in the thirties or forties. The picture is from this morning.

The Christmas Party at firehouse #3 was a huge success. We filled the firehouse to capacity and I think next year we will have to look at firehouse #5, which is a little larger and has indoor plumbing for our event. I’d like to say thanks to the Ranch Manager and all the volunteers who helped put things together, as well as to Bernice, who played and sang for us.

Thanks also to the Hartsel Fire Protection District, who allowed us to use the building. I and I think everyone else who attended, had a great time. The gift exchange was fun (except my picture frames were claimed by another) and the folks seemed to have a good time.

Be sure to put the party on your calendar for next year!
We are currently working on a new website, which we hope to launch shortly after the first of the year. We will try to maintain both for a while until folks have a chance to get on board. The new site should be much easier to navigate. We have had many people who became frustrated when they tried to download the newsletters, or documents. We are very optimistic that the new site will eliminate a lot of these frustrations.
At the December 10, 2011 meeting, the Board approved the budget for next year.

Hello December, Rather cold this time of year and from what it looks like we might even get a White Christmas! Speaking of Christmas we have the Christmas party coming up on the 10th of December and it starts at 6PM at Fire Station #3. This year the main menu is Italian food! My Wife and I are looking forward to seeing you all there. Please Call, Email or stop by the office and let us know if you are going to attend. There is a posting on the website and posted on the bulletin board.
If you haven’t noticed we have boarded 4 llamas in the winter pasture, I would like to remind folks that, yes, it is ok to look at the live stock, but please do not try to feed them. If you are interested in Pasturing a horse or llama we are augmented for ten animals and I have room for 4 more. The Cost is $100 per animal for six months and that is from October to April and April to October. Water is provided, however feeding and care is the owner’s responsibility.
The Fire department will be lighting off the Burn pit soon, so keep your eyes open for a really big fire. Because of the dangers that accompany burning the pit, we ask that you do not get too close.
The reservoir is iced over and the fishing has stopped. There should not be anybody out there except to walk around the lake. Please No Ice Fishing!
The Ranch Roads have been taken care of pretty well since I have been here and I do appreciate the amount of work Road and Bridge puts into helping us out. I have been noticing more trash on the side of the roads. Please do not litter! This is where you live and visit. Please help keep the Ranch of the Rockies Clean!
